Abstract

Women who lose a child in the perinatal period, either intrauterine or in the neonatal stage, suffer personal, social and institutional rejection of their grief, which has led to numerous mental health problems in pregnant women and their families. Perinatal grief is a unique and personal process, which leads to going through different phases, with their respective emotional, physiological and/or behavioral reactions, until emotional and social reintegration is achieved. Understanding this process and its characteristics is the basis for carrying out an adequate accompaniment by professionals. The interventions carried out by the nursing staff and, more particularly, the specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics, such as the importance of the farewell or the considerations at discharge, play an essential role, being able to achieve, or not, a healthy grief. The responsibility that falls on nursing requires great care for one's own mental health, continuous training and great team support. However, these resources are currently very scarce. There are no conclusive studies, however, in other countries a considerable improvement in their mental health has been observed due to the protocolized interventions put in place
