Enfermedad celiaca: cuidados de enfermería

Abstract

Celiac Disease is a systemic immune-mediated condition triggered by the ingestion of gluten and related prolamins, found in a variety of foods such as wheat, barley, and rye. It causes intestinal damage and a wide range of symptoms, as well as nutritional deficiencies in advanced stages due to malabsorption. Its prevalence has increased, surpassing 1% of the global population. Currently, there is no curative treatment; the recommended approach is strict adherence to a Gluten-Free Diet, which can sometimes be challenging for patients to maintain. The role of the nurse is crucial in conducting a holistic assessment and individualizing care for newly diagnosed patients through planning, implementation, and evaluation of interventions on the hygiene-dietary habits of celiacs, as well as providing education to family members and the community.
