Melatonina y quimioterapia

Abstract

Melatonin is a hormone synthesized mainly in the pineal gland. This hormone exerts very relevant functions in a great variety of biological processes. One of the important actions described by melatonin is its oncostatic effects, inhibiting the genesis and development of a wide variety of tumors, particularly hormone-dependent. Melatonin exerts beneficial actions against cancer through different mechanisms highlighting its antiestrogenic, apoptotic, antioxidant, antiangiogenic, antiproliferative, and antimetastatic actions. The present work carried out a systematic review of in vivo and in vitro studies and clinical trials to analyze the clinical impact of melatonin and its future perspectives. The results show that melatonin is an effective compound as an adjuvant to chemotherapy, since it promotes tumor regression, prolongs patient survival and improves their quality of life. In addition, melatonin reduces the appearance of side effects resulting from chemotherapy.
