Muerte fetal: El papel de la enfermería

Abstract

Fetal death is a frequent event that occurs at any time during pregnancy, causing a great impact on the women who experience it in all spheres of their health. The objective of this study is to describe the different forms of fetal death and their causes, the consequences this entails both for the woman who suffers it and her environment, and the role of the nursing professionals who care for her. Despite advances in prenatal care, high numbers of stillbirths persist overtime. In developing countries these figures are even higher. Currently, high rates of unwanted pregnancies and advanced maternal age during pregnancy are the main responsible factors, due to their association with voluntary interruption of pregnancy and elevated frequency of spontaneous abortions during the first trimester. A woman who suffers a stillbirth will experience grief. Nurses and midwives have a critical role to play in minimizing harm and assisting in that process. Their knowledge, technical and communication skills, and their attitude, will be decisive
