Abstract

ABSTRACT: Introduction: stroke is the first cause of acquired disability in adults and, nowadays, it is the second cause of death in the world. Within the great variability of its symptoms, those of a motor nature with repercussions on the upper extremity stand out in this work. Objective: to demonstrate that therapeutic exercise is more effective than constraint induced movement therapy. Material and methods: 56 patients who have suffered a stroke and are in a subacute stage will be divided into two groups. Group A will receive a therapeutic exercise treatment and group B will undergo an intervention protocol of constraint induced movement therapy. In total, group A will have 12 sessions of 1 hour spread over 4 weeks and group B will have 10 sessions of 3.5 hours spread over two weeks. The data will be collected by dynamometry, Modified Ashworth Scale, Fugl - Meyer Assessment, Box and Block Test, Nine - Hole Peg Test and ECVI - 38. Results analysis plan: the results obtained from the variables between the two groups and between the measurements at the beginning and at the end will be compared. Strengths and weaknesses: although with a small and heterogeneous sample, this is the first study to analyze and compare the results between therapeutic exercise and constraint induced movement therapy. Discussion / Conclusion: better results are expected for group A than for group B. Therapeutic exercise is proving to be an approach with satisfactory results in the field of neurological rehabilitation.
