The study of natural risks in three valleys located in Argentina, Bolivia and Peru demonstrates that its perception by the people is strongly influenced by the level of socioeconomic development and that the type of risks changes as the way of life do. The concept of natural risk can not be correctly understood without taking into account the idea of sustainability of the whole system of relationship between the society and the natural environment.
