Abstract

ABSTRACT. The transformation of Spanish towns from the middle of 19th century onward was conditioned by the self-interest of the bourgeoisie, that, in many ways, restricted the expansion of building land. This together with the growing of urban population, resulted in a permanent housing shortage that affected mainly the urban working-class. The scanty institutional contributions were, besides belated, insufficient to solve the problem.
