Abstract

ABSTRACT. The Saja beechwood is now one of the best preserved forested areas of Cantabria. It is integrated in the Campoo-Cabuérniga communal association, a seven thousand hectares area of pasturelands and woodlans profited for centuries by neighbouring communities. This article aims to analyze their land-use transformations. While during the XIX century there was a high cattle pressure, the timber explotation grew increasingly from the 1950 decade and finaly the recent environmental awareness and the demand for recreational spaces introduce new problems in the land-use compatibility.
