RESUMEN: La igualdad de género constituye un derecho humano fundamental y, no obstante, continúa siendo una tarea pendiente por lograr. En este sentido, muchos países trabajan unidos bajo una serie de programas y convenios a favor del papel de la mujer. Sin embargo, el problema se vuelve más difícil de combatir en sociedades marcadas por las tradiciones religiosas y patriarcales, como es el caso de los países islámicos. Dentro de los países que forman Oriente Medio, donde se encuentra la mayor presencia musulmana en el mundo, se sitúa Turquía. Debido a su localización y a las relaciones internacionales que mantiene ha obtenido una posición estratégica, tanto para Oriente como para Occidente. Turquía es candidato para formar parte de la Unión Europea, pero uno de los requisitos para adherirse es el respeto a los derechos de la mujer. Para evaluar la situación de Turquía en materia de género se ha adaptado el Índice de Desarrollo de Género (IDG) que elabora el Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD). Se ha obtenido este índice, así como sus índices e indicadores intermedios, para las subregiones de Turquía para los años 2009 y 2019. De esta manera se ha podido observar la gran disparidad de género en desarrollo humano que persiste en Turquía y la falta de homogeneidad en todo el territorio. Las actuaciones en materia de educación y en el mercado laboral han permitido la evolución de la zona este de Turquía en cuanto a desarrollo de género y, en consecuencia, que las diferencias entre las subregiones se reduzcan. Pese a esto, las subregiones del este de Turquía siguen siendo las más desfavorecidas del país.

ABSTRACT: Gender equality entails a fundamental human right, yet it remains an unfinished target. In this regard, many countries are working together following a different range of programs and agreements in order to promote and preserve the figure of women in society. However, the issue is harder to manage amongst those governments which have religious and patriarchal traditions, as is the case in islamic countries. Amongst Middle-East countries, where the biggest populations of islamic world citizens reside, we would find Turkey. Due to its location and held international relations, it has obtained a strategic position in both the Eastern and Western worlds. Turkey is an active candidate for entering the European Union, but one of the requirements would be the respect of women's rights. In order to assess Turkey’s gender situation, the Gender Development Index (GDI) generated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been adapted. Such an index has been obtained, along with its indexes and medium indicators for subregions within Turkey for 2009 and 2019. In this way, it has been possible to observe the great gender disparity in human development that persists in Turkey and the lack of homogeneity throughout the territory. The actions held in the matters of education and the work market have allowed for the evolution of Eastern Turkey in terms of gender development and, consequently, for the differences between sub-regions to be reduced. Nevertheless, the subregions in Eastern Turkey are still the most disadvantaged of the country.
