Juan de Ávila. Catolicismo y Ortodoxia

Abstract

ABSTRACT Juan de Ávila will be one of the most important and influential figures of the 16th century in the Castilian religious field, and would leave a deep mark on the Catholic Church to this day. Especially, in the life of Fr. Ávila we can highlight the decades of 1520 and 1530, which are the main axis of this work. The religious and spiritual influence that he received during his years of study in Salamanca and at the University of Alcalá de Henares was thanks to an atmosphere of openness and religious innovation, full of humanist ideas and an ideology based on prayer, meditation and gathering. We can point to the stages of Alcalá de Henares and the stay in Seville, as the two periods of greatest influence and modeling in the personality and spirituality of Juan de Ávila. He would end up becoming the Master, the Apostle of Andalusia. He would create a school that would welcome an infinity of disciples, through whom he was able to reproduce his spiritual and preaching work throughout Andalusia and beyond. In the same way, he composed a quite complete written production that would serve as a guide and consolation for all those who needed it and that we have preserved practically in its entirety to this day.
