Trastornos de la conducta alimentaria en varones

Abstract

ABSTRACT : PURPOSE: There is a paucity of studies on men with eating disorders (ED). Thus we decided to conduct a study to describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile of males with ED who attended their first treatment in a specialized unit. METHODOLOGY: We retrospectively evaluated 110 males between the years 2010 and 2021; data were extracted from medical records and initial assessments. RESULTS: The most frequent diagnosis was anorexia nervosa (32.7%); mean age at diagnosis of ED was 27.27 (11.90). The mean time without treatment was 74.16 months. Adequate adherence to treatment was observed (76.6%), with a predominance of discharge due to complete remission. Another comorbid mental disorder was diagnosed in 43.6% of the cases. The most common was anxiety disorder. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible that the diagnosis of males with ED is more difficult to make and their request for help is more delayed. It seems necessary to raise awareness in the health care setting in order to achieve better detection of cases.
