Abstract

ABSTRACT: Passive smoking is considered a very prevalent public health problem. It is the third leading cause of preventable death after smoking and alcoholism. Environmental tobacco smoke negatively affects children's health as their bodies are more vulnerable and less able to respond to the toxic agents of smoke. The main damage occurs at the respiratory level, increasing cases of pneumonia, asthma and bronchiolitis. There are also endocrine alterations and cardiovascular damage, growth retardation due to metabolic alterations and changes in breast milk or greater susceptibility to neoplasms or caries. It has also been shown that smoking in mothers directly exposed to tobacco smoke has negative consequences for the fetus and can lead to spontaneous abortions, premature rupture of membranes or preterm newborns. It is difficult to define exactly the line that separates the effects produced in the prenatal and postnatal stage. For this reason, primary care, schools and public organizations are carrying out strategies for the prevention of this habit in order to reduce this exposure. The development of such programs is vital to prevent this population group from carrying a series of avoidable comorbidities into adulthood.
