Abstract

Cannabis is a drug (THC is its main psychoactive component), whose negative effects on health associated with increasing consumption (3rd most consumed in Spain, EU and the world) is framed as a public health problem. This consumption, mainly smoked, becomes more pernicious in vulnerable populations. In this sense, more and more studies associate its use in women with problems about reproductive and sexual health: lower fertility rates, longer time to conceive that could be related to changes in sex hormones, the probable alterations in the methylation of the DNA they produce and the ECS that exists in their reproductive system. Additionally, cardiovascular diseases or anemia associated with its consumption during pregnancy are described. On the other hand, the extent of THC and other cannabinoids together with the restriction of oxygen that seems to produce its smoking consumption are associated with problems in the development of the fetus: lower birth weight, malformations, immunological, behavioral and neurodevelopmental problems. Problems that, it seems, are usually associated with the epigenetic impact of its consumption on pregnancy. Its consumption is also contraindicated during breastfeeding and in co-sleeping with the baby, since these cannabinoids accumulate in breast milk producing effects on neurological, cognitive and motor development and are associated with behavioral problems.
