La enfermedad Alzheimer ha incrementado su prevalencia en los últimos años y los datos disponibles señalan que el número de casos continuará creciendo. A pesar de este crecimiento, los avances tanto en el desarrollo de técnicas diagnósticas, como en la implementación de nuevas líneas terapéuticas han sido mínimos en la última década. El deterioro irreversible producido por la enfermedad, para el que no se dispone actualmente de un tratamiento definitivo, así como la anticipación de este y la adaptación del estilo de vida a las demandas de la patología, pueden generar inconvenientes en la salud mental y física de los pacientes o de sus cuidadores. Las alteraciones del estado mental son distintas en cada uno de los individuos, abarcan desde la ansiedad hasta la irritabilidad y pueden llegar a convertir a la persona previamente sana, en un sujeto enfermo. De este punto, deriva la importancia del apoyo proporcionado por el personal de enfermería en la prestación de cuidados y en la adaptación a esta condición de salud degenerativa que irrumpe en la vida de las personas.
Alzheimer´s disease has increased its prevalence in recent years and available data indicate that the number of cases will continue to grow. Despite of this growth the development of diagnostic techniques or new therapeutic lines have been minimal in the last decade. The irreversible deterioration caused by the disease, for which a definitive treatment is not currently available, as well as the adaptation of their lifestyle to the requires of the disease, could produce drawbacks in patients or caregivers mental and physical health. The alterations of the mental state are variable between individuals, ranging from anxiety to irritability. Also, they can turn the previously healthy person into a sick subject. From this point, derives the importance of the support provided by the nursing in the provision of care and in adapting to this degenerative health condition that breaks into its lives.
