Abstract

ABSTRACT: The transfer of harmful aquatic species carried in ships' ballast water and sediments from one place to another is a major global environmental problem, causing serious impacts on marine ecosystems, fishing grounds and other marine resources and even on human health in many parts of the world. As part of the global efforts to combat this threat, different ballast water treatment systems have been developed on board ships, in accordance with the standards established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with the entry into force of the International Convention for the Management of Ships' Ballast Water and its Sediments 2004, homogenising the regulation of this problem. This master's thesis entitled "Ballast Water Treatment by Ozone Injection" (innovative system in this type of ship) aims to carry out a technical and economic study of an ozone ballast water treatment plant installed on board a Suezmax series oil tanker, in this case the ship called "Monte Udala", built in 2018 in the shipyard of Navantia Puerto Real (Cádiz) in which I worked as responsible for the commissioning of all deck equipment and sea trials, complying with the regulations applicable to the management and treatment of ballast water set out by the IMO after the signing of this agreement in 2004. Different principles and types of ballast water treatment systems used in the maritime sector will also be presented.
