ABSTRACT. The economic disparities existing between the Spanish regions basically stem from differences in competitiveness. Since this is a complex and controversial concept from the spatial point of view, the article analyses the main factors of competitiveness of the Spanish regions and combines all of them in order to elaborate a composite indicator of regional competitiveness. The principal conclusion is that there is great persistence in the time ranking of the regions in accordance with the above-mentioned indicator and that this maintains a close correlation with the per capita GDP.
