Abstract

ABSTRACT: This master's thesis arises as part of the project " Estudio del Efecto de Bruun en distintos tramos de la costa andaluza " developed by IHCantabria. The objective of this project is to analyze the retreat of the coastline due to the rise in mean sea level on the Andalusian coast. Within the project activities, the purpose of the master's thesis is to analyze the characteristics of the equilibrium profiles of the beaches of the Andalusian coast. The Andalusian coast is under the influence of two very different waters, to the West it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and to the East by the Mediterranean Sea. Andalusia has a considerable coastline, being the fourth community with the longest coastal route. This characteristic entails the existence of many beaches, and consequently, of profiles to be analyzed. For this reason and to carry out an adequate analysis, it was decided to use the “K-means clustering” algorithm to classify the profiles based on morphology, grain size, and wave and tidal conditions. In total, a total of 9 different groups were obtained, which are represented by a prototype profile derived from the same characteristics of the profiles that make up the group. The balance profile adjustment was then performed on these prototypes. Three different models of equilibrium profile were used: a simple model with a single curve, a model with two curves for profiles with tide and another model with two lines for profiles with rock slab. Once all the results had been obtained, the possible relationships and associations between the characteristics of the profiles and their geographical distribution were analyzed and studied. This analysis revealed that there is a considerable difference between the profiles of the Mediterranean coast and those of the Atlantic coast. To a greater or lesser degree, all the parameters analyzed influence the morphology of the equilibrium profiles. Among other characteristics, the Atlantic profiles have a lower slope and a more variable morphology than the Mediterranean profiles.
