Abstract

The main goal of this project has been to analyze the low temperature transition (around 30-50 K) present in bulk magnetite, in the case of nanoparticles, in order to obtain an explanation about its origin. For this, magnetite nanoparticles with different sizes, morphologies and purities from commercial samples, samples synthesized in the laboratory, and nanoparticles of bacterial origin have been used. The structure and morphology of these nanoparticles have been characterized by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, measurements of magnetization as a function of the field and as a function of temperature have been used to characterize the magnetic response of the nanoparticles by combining AC and DC magnetic measurements.. The presence of a magnetic transition at low temperatures, in the range of 15-35 K, has been observed in all the samples, which can be adjusted by an Arrhenius model. Although the adjustments seem to confirm the presence of a transition similar to that of bulk in the case of nanoparticles, and suggest a phenomenon of freezing of coupled electron hopping at low temperatures, additional experiments will be necessary to clarify some of the anomalies detected in this transition.
