Abstract

This assigment pick up a proposal of project of the Instituto de Hidraulica Ambiental of the University of Cantabria (IHCantabria) to the Laboratorio de las División de Ciencia e Ingeniería de los Materiales (LADICIM). In it, they asked for the procurance of differents mecanichal parameters, such as breaking points or maximum strain of two vegetal species located in the entuaries of Cantabria, the autochthonous Spartina Maritima and the invasive Spartina Alterniflora, both in its stem and leaves. Once known these parameters, the focus will be to an explanation to the better adaptability and resistance of the Alterniflora against the Maritima, which is lowering its numbers in the littoral coast, risking disappearing because of the advance of its rival like it has happen before with other Spartina species. The project will consist on different tests, related to each other, that explains in a way or another, various capabilities of the individuals, being these: tensile test, optical characterization and pull up test. The tensile test will be performed, with a previous sample collection in one of the estuaries of the zone, in the facilities of LADICIM, which offers an equipment that can provide a resolution high enough for the results. The optical characterization will be done in the laboratories of the IH institute, which will provide an information that may explain the differences founded in the previous test. Finally, the pull up test will take place in the own habitat of the plant, being this the most experimental exercise, which results are not predictable. During the whole project many problems will be faced due to the heterogeneity of the different samples and the extraction conditions of the specimens, which will be tried to avoid by using programs like KaleidaGraph in the case of the tensile test and trying to find an adequate way to proceed in the pull up test.
