Abstract

ABSTRACT: Mental illnesses can generate a high level of dependency in people who suffer from them, needing the help and care of others. The people who usually assume this care are close relatives and, generally, they are women. The consequences of these diseases not only affect the sick person, they also have an impact on those who care for them. These caregivers face a great burden and, by focusing on attending to the patient's needs, they tend to relegate their own to the background. This not only leads to caregiver overload or burnout, but also has negative effects on the various spheres of life and health. Nursing must take this situation into account and try to help both the sick person and the caregiver, since the health of both is just as important. In addition, apart from the aid provided from Nursing, there are also resources that the caregiver can access in case of being overwhelmed.
