Abstract

ABSTRACT: Childbirth is a significant, unique, and transcendental experience in the life of every pregnant woman. The idealization of childbirth culminates in the desire for an uncomplicated birth, and is based, in turn, on the feeling of control and belonging through active decision-making. Labor pain is a key element in the delivery process, and it is defined as one of the most intense pain that a woman will experience throughout her life. Every woman has the right to choose between alleviating this pain or not, and how to do it. For this, we have both pharmacological analgesic methods (epidural or nitrous oxide), as well as alternative and / or complementary techniques (free mobility, hydrotherapy, music therapy or the use of birthing balls, among others). It is essential to know and handle all accessible methods, where the nursing role is essential in order to achieve a positive birth experience. All information related to pain management options should be provided at each stage of the process, along with their contraindications, benefits, and disadvantages. As well as serving as practical and emotional support, accompanying and generating a comforting and safe environment.
