Abstract

ABSTRACT: Perinatal mortality is a painful event that causes a strong emotional impact on both, the parents and the health professionals. Speciallized training, as well as adequate communicative skills, support and monitoring by the multidisciplinary unit, guarantee comprehensive care and quality service, in order to facilitate a healthy grieving. There has been a significant progress in the past years regarding support for perinatal loss. Nevertheless, despite the advances in health assistance, there are still major deficiencies in this field. The reasons behind this issue are the specialists’ lack of knowledge along with the social stigmatization embedded in society, since perinatal mortality is still a not so visible and recognised situation. The nursing professionals become specially valuable, relevant and act as a referent during the whole process, with the main objective of providing better individualized care, which will allow the family to face the difficult situation they have to experience in the best possible way.
