Abstract

ABSTRACT. This study tries to find a viable solution for a LNG carrier to fulfil the requirements stated in the BWM convention which forces the installation of a ballast water treatment plant. In order to do this, the study explains the requirements and rules of the convention, focusing in the most relevant aspects that affect the vessel; compares the main technologies available, detailing the work principle they use and choosing to commercial systems to explain their working cycle and all the elements they have, to find the most suitable for the type of vessel and operation; the comparison revolves around the footprint of the systems, a matter of high importance since this is a retrofit of an existing engine room, the operating costs of the systems and the effectiveness for all the environments in which the vessel operates. Once the adequate system is selected, the study plans how the retrofit is going to be performed attending to the location and requirements for the system to work: refrigeration, ballast water, sanitary water, control air and electric power.
