RESUMEN: Las carreras de larga distancia han favorecido desde su aparición al desarrollo turístico gracias a la difusión de información en el terreno deportivo. En este trabajo se va a analizar la categoría más conocida de todas, la maratón; desde sus orígenes hasta la situación actual de este gran evento deportivo. El negocio del running ha crecido a pasos agigantados, hace algunos años los que participaban en una maratón eran runners1 expertos, hoy en día podemos ver a muchos corredores amateurs2, incluso novatos, que se atreven con esta prueba atlética. Se trata de una modalidad de deporte individual, en el que no se depende de nadie para entrenar, y económica. Estas características hacen que, en los últimos años de crisis, se haya incrementado su práctica. También se está convirtiendo en uno de los eventos más populares para que las empresas patrocinen y participen. Por último, cabe mencionar el impacto social que se le da a una localidad si tiene éxito.

ABSTRACT: The long distance races have favored since its appearance to the tourist development thanks to the diffusion of information in the sports field. In this assessment we will analyze the best known category of all, the marathon; from its origins to the current situation of this great sporting event. The business of running has grown by leaps and bounds, some years ago those who participated in a marathon were expert runners, today we can see many amateur runners, even novices, who dare with this athletic event. It is an individual sport modality, in which one does not depend on anyone to train, and economical. These characteristics mean that, in the last years of crisis, its practice has increased. It is also becoming one of the most popular events for companies to sponsor and participate. Finally, it is worth mentioning the social impact that is given to a locality if it is successful.
