Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this work is to analyze the evolution of the gender gap in Spain from 2010 to 2014 using data from the Salary Structure Survey (SSS). We first present a descriptive analysis of average wage differences by sex, age group, years of seniority, education and type of contract. The main conclusion of this preliminary analysis is that men systematically earn more than women on average. When individuals are over 30, however, although men still earn more than women, the wage gap decreases as educational level increases. In the second part of this study, we examine the fundamental determinants of annual wage by means of both socioeconomic and characteristic variables of the labor market in order to determine if the wage differences between men and women are significant. Our results suggest the existence of a bias in favor of men in terms of wages, which on average seems to be slightly above 5000 euros. To end a long tradition of discrimination against women, we consider essential the implementation of policies that guarantee equality of opportunities. These measures include not only policies aimed at non-discrimination in terms of wages but also in selection processes and initiatives to promote the balance between family and working life.
