Global Surgery

Cirugía Global
Authors: Cabrera López, Marta;
Abstract

ABSTRACT : For a long time, surgery was not included in the discussion on how healthcare could be improved worldwide, especially in the most remote places on Earth. The global burden of non-communicable diseases and traumatic injury is increasing at an alarming rate. Almost thirty percent of the total disease burden in the world is due to conditions that require surgical, obstetric, gynecological or anesthesia expertise and training. Worldwide, roughly five billion people do not have access to safe, affordable and timely surgical care. In order to change the current situation, Global Surgery was born to achieve the vision of providing universal access to surgery where and when it is needed. In this review, the current challenge of establishing Surgery as a universal right and its scope will be closely addressed. Likewise, the involvement in the provision of surgical care at different levels, both local, national and international, will also be described.
