Places-Up: la plataforma colaborativa de Torrelavega

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Taking into consideration the cultural and technological changes of the past years, a need has been created in order to motivate business reinvention, as well as, cities renovation in social, economic and technological terms. Torrelavega is a city of Cantabria that is suffering massively the consequences of the Great Recession. This situation not only dropped down indicators as unemployment rate and gross disposable income per capita, but also, it had created a downbeat scenario from commercial and social perspectives. Places-Up is a platform that combines concepts as Collaborative economy, E-business and E-commerce, becoming a feasibility and revolutionary project to implement in Torrelavega. Basically, Places-Up is a facilitator website that put in contact people with an idea, a start-up or a brand with owners of commercial premises, making possible renting places in short-terms conditions in order to organize pop-up events. To establish the viability of the above project, an empirical study has been done using focus group methodology. A focus group is a gathering of deliberately selected people who participate in a planned discussion intended to provoke consumer perceptions about a particular topic of interest in an environment that is non-threatening. In this case, premises owners, entrepreneurs and the public sector have been participated in the group meeting. Results have shown the main weaknesses and straightnesses of the model. Some of the drawbacks were focus on the need of collaboration between Places-Up and the public sector or in the requirement to the platform to offer some extra services. On the other hand, between the upsides, the cultural and technological growth that will create in Torrelavega and the upswing in terms of business and leisure, were highlighted. In essence, an astonishingly positive solution to improve the social welfare and economic development of Torrelavega.
