Abstract

In the following Project to obstain the Degree, is carried out study on the different ballast water treatment systems of merchant ships, to avoid marine invasions, applied to the motor vessel "BAHIA DE ALCUDIA". The main invasive species will be studied, as well as the environmental impact they cause and the affected areas. The different norms that have been emerging to combat invasive species will be analyzed, until reaching the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Sediments of Ships (BWM) of 2004, where the requirements that ships have to meet if they want to make international crossings are specified. The different treatment systems that allow ships to comply with the Convention will also be studied. Finally, it develops a ship management plan “BAHIA DE ALCUDIA” choosing the most appropriate treatment system according to the criteria of effectiveness, costs, environmental impact and safety for the crew.
