The main objective of this thesis is to make an approximation to the fashion and fabrics used in the Spanish Court between 1527 and 1665, demonstrating the importance of the study of clothing from an historical and artistic point of view. This is related to another objective: showing the relevance of an adequate conservation of these elements due to their heritage value. Hence, this thesis/essay/assignment will be based on the use of direct sources found in the National Archives and on work by important painters. The aim is to make a social and artistic approach, taking into account the European context, the implications and motivations for the development of fashion and economic, legislative, social, political and commercial matters. We have to consider that fashion, understood as we do today, was born in the Medieval Period, but it was developed and consolidated in the Modern Age. Within our field of study, the court, it emerged from the need to stand out, in a very hierarchical context, showing the importance of pretending. That is to say, the European Courts that compete against each other use fashion as another element to demonstrate their supremacy, and this is reflected in portraits, inventories, archives, etc.
