Abstract

ABSTRACT: Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review the available evidence regarding distal radius fractures at home, looking for a technique that allows an optimal functional recovery, besides of being easy to accomplish for the patient. Methods: An electronic databases search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane and PEDro in order to retrieve literature regarding distal radius fracture rehabilitation. The different techniques found were analyzed considering its features to be performed at home by the patient without the therapist. Finally, an advice and exercise program was selected as the most efficient method, and the results obtained from trials published in the last decade were reviewed. Results: Five clinical trials were reviewed, all of them obtaining significant results within their fields of research, in the fracture rehabilitation treated both surgically and conservatively. The positive results obtained were recorded in samples, in which patients with associated complications had been excluded, except for a small number of subjects in one study. Discussion: The results of the reviewed studies support the recommendation of a program of exercises and advices at home as a rehabilitation therapy following a distal radius fracture, suitable for optimal functional outcomes in patients who are not suffering associated complications.
