Abstract

RESUMEN: La Natividad es una de las escenas más representadas y reconocibles del arte medieval. Sus elementos iconográficos han quedado arraigados en el imaginario colectivo, pero se desconoce que gran parte de ellos no provienen de los relatos bíblicos, si no de los manuscritos apócrifos, un tema poco conocido que ha sido objeto de controversia durante toda su historia por el rechazo de la Iglesia. No obstante, la Iglesia bizantina incluyó estos escritos no canónicos en su liturgia, normalizando también su inclusión en los programas iconográficos del Medievo. De ese modo, y por la potencia del Imperio oriental frente a la fragmentada Europa, sus imágenes acabaron influyendo en la Italia del románico y esta, a su vez, en el resto de Occidente.
