Abstract

La enfermedad de Alzheimer, y la demencia en general, representa un gran problema de Salud Pública que afecta a los enfermos, las familias, las comunidades y las sociedades. Se estima que para el año 2030 vivirán en el mundo con demencia, aproximadamente, 75 millones de personas. Debido al aumento de la incidencia de esta enfermedad, es crucial crear conciencia y difundir el conocimiento sobre la misma, así como desarrollar redes de apoyo a los pacientes y a sus familias. Cuidar a una persona con Alzheimer es una tarea muy difícil y responsable que exige devoción de un cuidador, pero también la ayuda de un equipo profesional terapéutico. Concretamente, la labor de la enfermera incluye no sólo la realización de tratamientos especiales y específicos, sino también ayudarle en las actividades de la vida diaria, acompañarle, además de apoyar y, principalmente, educar a los cuidadores y a los familiares del paciente. El objetivo general de este trabajo es el de desarrollar los conceptos específicos de la enfermedad de Alzheimer, que sirvan de guía a los profesiones sanitarios (enfermeras) para el cuidado de los pacientes que sufran esta enfermedad.
