Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze some cases of misappropriations perpetrated by bishops and other agents of the Late Antique Church in the Pars Orientis of the Christian Empire. By using as main sources the Acts of the Ecumenical Councils of the fifth century, we will examine how bishops are often responsible for a wide variety of crimes against property, including theft and plundering, sometimes even using violence. These abuses against private or ecclesiastical property, corresponding to power?s logics previously successfully implemented by secular hierarchies, are normally aimed at the benefit of their extended families or of the urban clienteles generally used by the bishops both to achieve their power and keep it.
