Abstract

ABSTRACT: Spanish teaching for professional communication is a growing area within general Spanish teaching as a foreign language, however it is still unexplored and requires further research and analysis. Our current proposal: “Spanish course for sport medicine” aims to contribute to the development of this branch of Spanish Teaching. We will start our project with some relevant theoretical and practical bibliography about specialized curriculum design and the main features of sportive medicine’s language. Our research is focused to address what is specific for designing our course. The professional context of the students receiving the course contains their communicative needs. Added to that, the characterization of the specialty language of sports medicine will provide us with the bases to develop a specialized course in terms of contents, objectives, methodology and evaluation. Considering the characteristics of the profession in terms of contexts, terminology, specific texts y discursive traits and more frequent and important tasks, task based methodology and the case study are the methods that best fit to our objectives. Taking this into account we get the theoretical and practical basis to design the course and propose two didactic units. However, this is only a very small effort compared to what remains to be done in Spanish for specific purposes given that communication is a changeable matter. There are many remaining questions still to be investigated in the language of specialty, and therefore so much still to be improved in the classroom at a practical level.
