El envejecimiento progresivo de la población tiene como consecuencia el aumento de enfermedades neurodegenerativas, entre las que se encuentra el Alzheimer, una enfermedad degenerativa e irreversible del cerebro, que afecta de forma progresiva a la capacidad de pensar y a la memoria, llegando a dejar a la persona totalmente incapacitada. El enfermo de Alzheimer en fase terminal, necesitará unos cuidados de calidad, proporcionados desde una perspectiva holística, conservando el confort y la calidad de vida, y para ello se requieren los Cuidados Paliativos (CP). La finalidad de los CP no es curar al enfermo terminal, sino proporcionarle calidad, bienestar y confort en la última etapa de su vida. La metodología de la presente monografía se ha basado en realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre los Cuidados Paliativos en la fase terminal de Alzheimer, con el de fin expresar la necesidad de proporcionar por parte de los profesionales de enfermería este tipo de cuidados en estos enfermos, y crear un documento, con el objetivo de ampliar los conocimientos respecto al tema planteado.

The progressive aging of the population results in an increase in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's, a degenerative and irreversible disease of the brain, which progressively affects the ability to think and memory, leaving the person totally incapacitated. The terminally ill Alzheimer's patient will need quality care, provided from a holistic perspective, preserving comfort and quality of life, and for this, Palliative Care (CP) is required. The purpose of CP is not to cure the terminally ill, but to provide quality, well-being and comfort in the last stage of life. The methodology of this monograph has been based on a review of the literature on palliative care in the terminal phase of Alzheimer's, with the purpose of expressing the need to provide nursing professionals with this type of care in these patients, and create a document, with the aim of broadening the knowledge regarding the topic raised.
