Abstract

RESUMEN: La intención de este trabajo fin de grado es analizar las diferencias salariales por género y tipo de contrato en el mercado laboral español para los años 2006 y 2010, abordando el tema de manera teórica y empírica. En primer lugar, se realiza una revisión de la literatura acerca de las teorías que se encuentran para explicar este fenómeno tanto por el lado de la oferta –aquellas que giran en torno a las características del individuo– cómo por el lado de la demanda – explicaciones enfocadas a la estructura del mercado y la discriminación pura, en vez de a características que atienden a las diferencias en capital humano–. A continuación, a partir de las bases de microdatos del Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) correspondientes a la Encuesta cuatrienal de Estructura Salarial, se plantea un modelo econométrico a partir del cual se extraerá la evolución de las diferencias salariales para los años estudiados. Se estimará por mínimos cuadrados ordinarios (MCO) la ecuación salarial propuesta diferenciando por género, y por tipo de contrato. En último lugar, se señalan de manera muy breve algunas de las prácticas realizadas en el ámbito empresarial para acabar con las diferencias salariales, y cómo los resultados evidencian la buena dirección pasando a ser las diferencias salariales de un 19% en el año 2006 a un 17% en 2010. Además, los resultados muestran que las diferencias salariales son mayores para quienes presentan un contrato indefinido frente a quienes poseen un contrato de carácter temporal. Aun así, las diferencias salariales para ambas modalidades contractuales, han descendido entre 2006 y 2010. No obstante, la existencia de factores inobservables y de difícil medición como las preferencias de las propias mujeres a la hora de decidir cómo conciliar la vida familiar y la vida laboral, y el desarrollo de técnicas econométricas cada vez más complejas, dejan abierto el tema a nuevos estudios que enriquezcan el debate.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to analyze from a theoretical and practical point of view the gender pay gap by type of contract in the Spanish labour market from 2006 to 2010. First of all, relevant literature is reviewed, on the one hand supply’s theories, which pay attention on individual characteristics and in the other hand demand’s theories which focus on the market structure and discrimination instead of the features of human capital. Secondly, it is shown briefly some of the measurements adopted by companies to avoid the gender pay gap. Finally, using the database of the Wage Structure Survey (National Statistics Institute), this paper develops an econometric model to study the evolution of the gender pay gap from 2006 to 2010. Salary regressions according gender and type of contract are estimated using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). The results show a decrease on the pay gap of 19% and 17% in 2006 and 2010, respectively. In addition the pay gap is higher in case of permanent workers comparing to temporary ones. Even so, both types of contract show a reduction of the gender pay gap between 2006 and 2010.However the existence of unobservable factors, like for example the preferences of women to balance labour and family life, and the improvement of new complex econometrics techniques, leaves open the issue to new studies.
