Abstract

Based on a hybrid methodology experimental design, this thesis investigates the impact of voice on the perception of simultaneous interpreting quality as a function of the interpreter's age and sex. In the quantitative approach, 156 participants completed a questionnaire to assess the simultaneous interpretations produced in a recording studio by eight interpreters in different age groups, four of each sex. The recordings were controlled for homogeneous interpretative quality with respect to their linguistic characteristics to favor the assessment of non-verbal factors, especially their voice. The qualitative approach included 20 interviews focused on a detailed description of the participants' experiential perceptions in the quantitative paradigm. The study empirically proves that the interaction between sex and age perceived through the vocal acoustic characteristics of the interpreters biases the way in which the listener evaluates their renditions.
