Abstract

Bipolar disorder (DB) is a chronic and recurrent mental disease characterized by altered mood that directly influences the psychosocial functioning and quality of life of those who suffer from it. For this reason, it requires a comprehensive intervention for the prevention of relapses and the improvement of life quality. Psychoeducation has shown to be effective in preventing relapses and promoting adherence to treatment. The present study has been designed as a randomized clinical trial. It includes a control group, receiving the usual treatment, and an intervention group, receiving three psychoeducation sessions. All the patients included have been diagnosed by DB and admitted to the Psychiatry Unit of the University Hospital of Vic for the disorder’s relapse. The main objective of the study is to identify whether the intervention based on three predischarge psychoeducation sessions influences on the subsequent relapses and the fulfilment of visits. Patients assigned to the intervention group are expected to perform better in terms of readmissions, emergency room visits, and follow-up visits in the next twelve months of follow-up. The results show that there are differences between the control and the intervention group in readmissions and emergency room visits at three, six, and twelve months of follow-up, although no statistically significant differences were found. Patients in the control group obtained better results in fulfilling of visits.
