Abstract

Avhandlingen omhandler i videste forstand problemer knyttet til formidling av fortid i kulturhistoriske museumsutstillinger. Museumsgjenstanden har en kontekst som er tapt for alltid, utstillingskuratorene kan ikke vite eksakt hvilke omgivelser den virket i og hvilken betydning den en gang hadde. Sjansen for at en gjenstand blir feiltolket er derfor stor. Den sentrale problemstillingen i avhandlingen er: Hva er en god kulturhistorisk utstilling? Materialet for prosjektet er tre forskjellige utstillingskonsepter fra 1970-1990-tallet. Konseptene er representert ved Skulptursamlingen i Det Kongelige Museum i Stockholm, Antikkutstillingen i Nasjonalmuseet i København og to utstillinger av arkitekt Sverre Fehn: utstillingen hans på Storhamarlåven, Hamar og Middelalderutstillingen ved Universitetets Kulturhistoriske Museum i Oslo. Selv om utstillingene er barn av noen lunde samme tid, er de svært forskjellige, og de lar seg plassere i tre kategorier: privatsamlingen, den gjenstandssentrerte og den brukerrelaterte utstilling. De skiller seg fra hverandre spesielt på områdene tekst, gjenstandstetthet og vektlegging av visualitet og estetikk. Gjennom en drøfting av samtidig museologisk forskning skiller seks felt seg ut som særlig viktige, og disse blir brukt i analysen for å bedømme kvaliteten på de tre utstillingsmåtene. De seks områdene er 1. Forståelsen av utstillingen som et medium. 2. Utstillinger kan forstås som massekommunikasjonssystem. 3. Museer er demokratiske institusjoner. Publikum må tas på alvor. 4. Historieformidlingen skal ikke legge skjule på at det er mye som ikke vites om historien. Publikum bør få ta del spørsmålene og de varierte tolkningene. 5. Teksten og språket skal henvende seg til publikum på et ikke-akademisk språk. 6. Utstillinger er kunstverk som kan frembringe estetiske opplevelser.
