Abstract

I denne oppgaven analyserer jeg representasjoner av identitet og nasjon i to teaterstykker. Stykkene er politiske satirer i "communitytheatre" sjangeren i Zimbabwe. Bakgrunnen for arbeidet er forståelsen av kulturell utrykk og populærkultur som en form for massemedia og som ytringer som deltar i hegemoniske kamper. Konteksten er den politiske situasjonen i Zimbabwe i 1999, dette året begynte opposisjonen å få fotfeste og det var en stille optimisme i forhold til videre utvikling av demokrati og styrking av menneskerettigheter. Stykkene jeg analyserer er allikevel kritiske til regimet. "The Members" (Amakhosi) kritiserer bl.a. korrupte MPs og "Ivhu versus the State" (Rooftop) intervensjon i DRC (Congo). Jeg er opptatt av hvordan motstanden utrykkes, og forskjeller i strategier mellom stykkene fra ulike geografiske settinger. Mitt teoretiske grunnlag og begrepsapparat utleder jeg fra cultural studies, diskursteori og postkoloniell teori. I dette begrepsapparatet vises det hvordan offentligheten består av motstridende diskurser, og at politisk kamp også er diskurspolitikk. En postkoloniell lesemåte vektlegger hybride representasjoner som unngår fortellinger i polariseringer og essensielle forestillinger om identitet. Dette er bakgrunnen for min lesemåte. Jeg analyserer stykkene ut fra hvordan de forteller aktuelle konfliktsituasjoner i Zimbabwe; hvilke konfliktlinjer skriver de seg inn? Hvordan er identitet representert i fortellinger om kjønn, klasse og rase? Hvordan fortelles maktpersoner, hvordan snakker de om ulikhet og relasjonen mellom hvite og sorte? Tilbyr stykkene mangfoldige eller stereotype representasjoner av identitet? Jeg analyserer hvordan de opplever og forteller nasjonen; gir de rom for mangfold av nasjonale identiteter? Hvordan forteller de om strategier for politisk endring? Jeg viser at begge teaterstykkene foregrep den politiske og sosioøkonomiske krisen som har utviklet seg i Zimbabwe fra 2000, deres motstandstrategier ligger også til grunn for den nåværende opposisjon.
