Expect Amazing: Qatar og fotball-VM - pressen mellom fotball og politikk

Abstract

Tildelingen av verdensmesterskapet i fotball i 2022 til Qatar føyer seg inn i en lengre rekke av kontroversielle valg av vertsnasjon for verdens største idrettsarrangementer. I denne masteroppgaven analyseres deler av pressedekningen, inndelt i tre omdiskuterte faser i opptakten til mesterskapet, og hvilke tolkningsrammer Al Jazeera English, The Guardian og Dagbladet trekker på. Studien bygger på både kvalitativ og kvantitativ analyse, der det har blitt identifisert fem saksspesifikke tolkningsrammer og hvordan nyhetsmedienes 249 artikler fordeler seg på rammene. Studien konkluderer med at dekningen gjennomgående har politiske undertoner, og menneskerettighetsbruddene blant Qatars fremmedarbeidere og problematisering av Det internasjonale fotballforbundet (FIFA) omtales mest i henholdsvis nyhets- og meningsstoffet til avisene. Mye av grunnen tilskrives The Guardian, som utviser en mer tydelig og kritisk dekning sammenlignet med de andre mediene.
