Abstract

Behavioural finance makes possible to understand the causes of certain human behaviours and develop effective measures to face problems in areas such as the health of citizens. Therefore, the aim of this work is to study, through a bibliographic review of the current literature, the foundations of behavioural finance and consider its areas of practical application in state policies, analyzing the factors and anomalies that affect the behaviour of people in the intertemporal choice. In particular, we have focus on the analysis of impulsivity or impatience in intertemporal choice and the magnitude effect, and its application in the field of health. Thus, we have carried out an empirical study to identify the relationship between dietary habits, in particular the Mediterranean diet (MD), and the impatience shown in the intertemporal choice, by the k-parameter (discount rate of the hyperbolic discount function). We have found that the low adherence to the MD group had the highest discount rate, while for the high adherence group we obtained the lowest discount rate, which means less impulsivity (more self-control). We also found lower values of k for higher rewards, suggesting the presence of the magnitude effect. These results could be used by public and private organizations that develop public health programs to increase their effectiveness.
