¿Qué son los neurotransmisores?

Abstract

Son sustancias químicas liberadas por una neurona. El nombre de la neurona depende del neurotransmisor que libera. Ejemplo: Acelticolina (Ach), colinérgicas; adrenalina, adrenérgicas. Para controlar nuestras conductas el cerebro utiliza hasta 100 neurotransmisores. Conviene aclarar que solo se conocen 50 sustancias que actuan como transmisores. Los neurotransmisores se dividen en tres grupos: Transmisores de moléculas pequeñas. Se originan de los alimentos que se consumen. Transmisores peptídicos(neuropéticos). El proceso de sintesis y transporte es más lento que el de las moléculas pequeñas. Gases transmisores. Hasta el momento se han identificado solo dos gases: óxido nítrico (NO) y el monóxido de carbono (CO) (Kolb y Whishaw, 2006).
