El mundo de la información deportiva creció como ningún otro en el periodismo del siglo XX. Difícilmente podemos encontrar una actividad de convocatoria masiva superior a la alcanzada por unos juegos olímpicos o un campeonato mundial de fútbol. El deporte es, en suma, una actividad cultural imprescindible en la sociedad contemporánea. Esta realidad plantea un gran reto para el periodista deportivo del siglo XXI, pues la profundización en el conocimiento de disciplinas de orden científico, humanista y social se hace tan imprescindible como el dominio de los deportes sobre los que informa.

The world of sports information grew at an unmatched rate in the XX century journalism. It is difficult to find any other activity that can call masses together at a scale higher than that reached by the Olympic Games or by a world soccer championship. Sport is, in short, an essential cultural activity in present-day society. Additionally, this reality poses a great challenge to XXI century sports journalists, as in-depth knowledge of scientific, humanistic and social disciplines has come to be as indispensable as the mastery of the sports on which they report.
