El lenguaje verbal como instrumento matemático

Abstract

La investigación analiza la forma como se manifiesta la comprensión del concepto de función en estudiantes de ingeniería, tomando como instrumento de comunicación el lenguaje verbal, y haciendo transferencia de este concepto a los otros tres lenguajes con que cuenta la matemática: algebraico, aritmético y geométrico. El análisis de la información recogida nos permitió concluir que no es prudente utilizar solo el lenguaje verbal para evaluar la comprensión, porque se estarían evaluando dos saberes en forma simultánea: los conocimientos matemáticos y la capacidad de redactar correctamente; esto haría que las deficiencias del estudiante en el segundo saber, que no es matemático, alteraran los resultados. Por ello se recomienda: primero, que se utilice el lenguaje oral, que le daría al estudiante la oportunidad de aclarar sus explicaciones y replicar objeciones, pero que se combine con otros lenguajes. Segundo, conviene involucrar un uso abundante del lenguaje verbal en el aula de matemáticas, como una poderosa herramienta para mejorar la comprensión, tanto matemática como lingüística.
