The article presents a brief hístorical account of action research, emphasizing its pragmatic purpose. The knowledge generated by this method stems from the educational practice and goes back to it. Therefore, this is an appropriate strategy to improve the educational action and thus achieve the professional perfecting of those that accomplish it.
Se presenta una breve reseña histórica de la investigación-acción, poniendo énfasis en su finalidad práctica. El conocimiento que genera este método nace en la actividad educativa y se revierte en ella; por lo tanto, es una estrategia adecuada para mejorar la acción educativa y lograr el perfeccionamiento profesional de quienes la realizan.
