Petrarca y los De viris illustribus

Abstract

De viris illustribus es un título estereotipado que remite a una tradición bien definida y que, para Petrarca y sus contemporáneos, estaba integrada por un número de obras muy reducido. Prolifera de manera llamativa en el entorno inmediato de Petrarca: además del propio Petrarca, Guglielmo da Pastrengo y Giovanni Colonna (amigos y estrechos colaboradores de aquel) escriben sendos De viris illustribus. En este artículo se sostiene que, mientras los dos amigos del humanista se acogen claramente a la tradición jeronimiana, las referencias principales de Petrarca son dos: por lo que hace a la estructura del conjunto, el De viris illustribus del pseudo Aurelio Víctor (que Petrarca creía de Plinio), y por lo que respecta a su intención y a su espíritu, la obra de Livio (y no, como venía sosteniéndose, las Vitae Caesarum de Suetonio). Por lo demás, un análisis de las intenciones expresadas por Petrarca proporciona ahora nuevos argumentos para vincular el De viris petrarquesco con una de las piezas más destacadas del Canzoniere: en efecto, parece razonable sostener que el «gentile spirto» destinatario de RVF 7 («La gola e ’l somno et l’otïose piume») no es otro que Giovanni Colonna, y que la obra a la que ahí se alude («la magnanima tua impresa») es precisamente el De viris de este último, aunque ennoblecido con las cualidades del De viris del propio Petrarca.
