Reforma urbana y opinión pública. Madrid y Bilbao, 1900-1936

Abstract

This chapter aims to discuss some specific elements of the urban planning in Madrid and Bilbao during the first third of the 20th century from a perspective linked to its internal reform projects. At a time when these two cities faced major challenges through the development of expansion plans stimulated by their profound economic, social and demographic changes, the evolution of their inner areas became a powerful object of debate that gave rise to several tensions. From these assumptions will be analyzed the proposals that defended, but also criticized, the search for the adequacy of those central spaces with the growing urbanization areas of the rest of the cities. This exercise will serve to understand more clearly the urgency that emerged during this period to conceive these cities in global terms.
