La formación de sulfuros masivos volcanogénicos en ambientes paleogeográficos extremos: anoxia, actividad microbiana y precipitación de sulfuros

Abstract

El proyecto de investigación se ha centrado en los depósitos de sulfuros masivos volcanogénicos (VMS) encajados en pizarra de Sotiel-Migollas, Tharsis, Neves Corvo y Lousal, en el dominio sur de la Faja Pirítica Ibérica. Estos se formaron en un corto período de tiempo en el límite Devónico-Carbonífero (Struniense, Fameniense superior) bajo condiciones paleogeográficas extremas. El principal objetivo de este trabajo ha sido caracterizar la geoquímica de los sulfuros masivos, el stockwork infrayacente y la pizarra encajante con el fin de evaluar los procesos mineralizadores, las fuentes de fluidos, la contribución biogénica y el ambiente redox durante la mineralización. Las conclusiones más relevantes son: (1) Importante actividad de microorganismos extremófilos durante los estadios iniciales del sistema en el sulfuro masivo carbonatado que se reflejan a través de una evolución mineralógica, textural e isotópica (δ34S, δ56Fe y δ65Cu en sulfuros, y δ13C y 87Sr/86Sr en carbonatos); (2) Existencia de un refino hidrotermal asociado a la evolución y maduración de la mineralización donde existe un gran aporte de fluidos profundos calientes y ricos en metales que se mezclaron con el agua marina; y (3) La pizarra del nivel mineralizado en Tharsis muestra una fuerte correlación entre biomarcadores de plantas superiores y trazadores redox; la degradación de grandes cantidades de materia orgánica procedente de bosques cercanos a la cuenca, posiblemente relacionado con el evento de extinción masiva Hangenberg, fue metabolizada por organismos sulfato-reductores en condiciones anóxicas.
