Abstract

The anonymity or non/anonymity in the donations of gametes is being the focus of debates in the international arena, advancing the most favorable positions to its lifting. In the Spanish case, the law still prescribes anonymity. In this context of debates around anonymity/non-anonymity, this article analyzes the reproductive strategies of single mothers by choice women who decide to become mothers outside the couple and hetero-biparental family scheme considering the recourse to known donors and/or anonymous ones, as well as the strategies, appropriations and resignifications of anonymity. The empirical basis of the article consists of 27 in-depth interviews of women at different stages in the process of becoming mothers with a donor, as well as participant observation in various meeting places (both online and in person) in the Barcelona area. The work argues that anonymity is resignified as a caring practice that protects children against the figure of the absent father and ensure the autonomy of the family project. At the same time, androcentric logics that consider those reproductive strategies as individualistic are analyzed. It is argued that these are, in fact, reformulations of the stigmatization of single mothers within patriarchal societies and, consequently, sanctions to the reproductive autonomy of women while eluding that the social responsibility of child rearing falls again on the mother figure.; El anonimato o no anonimato en las donaciones de gametos está siendo foco de debates en el ámbito internacional, avanzando las posiciones más favorables a su levantamiento.
